holy buckets, its late July.

It has been awhile. I have been working on some other blog projects (see list in profile) and so this personal whatever one has been neglected. I am going to try and change that! SO. Here is what my day was like today (technically yesterday now...)

I woke up and got dressed. It was polka-dot Wednesday and so I wore a leopard print skirt because spots are dots.  Last weekend I was in Fargo with family. I ate quite a few ricecakes with peanut butter on them. I forgot that I really like ricecakes with peanut butter. I bought ricecakes and peanut butter so that I could continue having them for breakfast. I made one up and was running late, so I carried it with me down to the coffee shop. I was trying to get my straw in my coldpress and was balancing my ricecake on my phone and ack my ricecake fell and went straight into a garbage can, the hole on the top of the trash was hardly larger than the ricecake and it just fell in without even touching an edge. I cannot aim that well while trying to. THEN i went outside top go to work and it was raining, a heavy mist almost rain kind of rain. My hair got small and sad and I was instantly damp and my ricecake fell in the garbage can at the coffee shop. It was a Monday on a Wednesday. Boooo.

Work was fun. I went on a mini co-op tour with my co-workers to 3 other co-ops to look at how they do things, what their signs are like, what kinds of shopping carts do they have, etc... I got something at each store that we don't sell at ours. My favorite snack I picked up were the jelly beans from Eastside! I think Linden Hills is where I will go to get gifts for people, they have so many nice fun general merch items and some really neat grocery things, like heirloom beans. Mississippi Market (on west 7th) is wonderful. I wish it were closer. The view when you go out to the parking lot is amazing, the store is nice and clean and colorful and their pizza from the deli was cheap (two slices for $4) and awesome!

I went back to work and bagged some groceries, checked my email, finished fixing some things from the weekend and then left early! What a nice work day.

After work I took the bus to a birthday party for my favorite 4 year old! I transferred busses at Franklin and Nicollet, there was the cute Wednesday mini farmers market today and so I bought some cucumbers and a bunch of garlic while waiting for the next 18. The birthday party was cute and fun. I got to watch three different small kids try pop rocks for the first time.

After the party I went to Doodle Club, which we had right up the street from where the party was. I liked where we met tonight, there is a large table that was perfect to spread out on and draw and chat and look at stuff. I look forward to future meetings there. I am really excited about the current project we are working on. I am also getting pumped about potential future projects!

I got home and decided it was so beautiful and nice out I would have a beer in the courtyard. A neighbor walked by with his dog and they stopped to hang out for a bit. This neighbor always wants to talk politics. He and I are on the same page, but, as we learned tonight some others are not. Another neighbor and her friend joined us. It turned out that her friend is an independent republican, his favorite politician is michelle bachmann, he believes that the bible is pretty much literal and that evolution is false!

Oh my word. Watching political talk guy and neighbor friend discuss issues was like pulling teeth. It essentially was like two 8th grade boys, one reads the new york times and is politically involved and loves the DFL party but makes sure to read about republicans too, the other listens to what his parents and grandparents say and takes opinion as fact. BUT they are adult men who (I can feel comfortable assuming) had been drinking a bit earlier in the evening. I did not expect their conversation to go they way it went, when it came down to the neighbors friend saying that he did not believe monkeys were our uncles I had to interject. WTF. This man says he is in the medical field (no idea what that exactly means) and that we did not crawl out of the ocean, that we are not from monkeys and blah blah blah.

I feel so blessed to have the family, friends, and co-workers that I have. Questioning/denying evolution is unheard of, loving and holding high respect for michelle bachmann is unheard of, these are things that I forget happen and are still happening in the minds of our peers. We didn't even touch on global warming, welfare, or the war on terror etc... but gay rights were brought up A LOT and nobody had a problem with it (silver lining?).

I listen to MPR and read the BBC for my news (and the variety and business sections of the daily paper, and various online news sources, ones like News One and some different right wing christian blogs... the blogs also have some great frugal cooking and craft/sewing ideas and I get to see other perspectives of whats going on in our world) and feel like I get a pretty well rounded news and social happening/temperature idea. I am feeling an urge to go deeper and research more so that the next time I am present at another courtyard political round-a-bout I can jump in and end a subject, just lay it down, no room for debate.

When the issue of abortion came up, I killed it. I stated reasons for needing it available and then blabbed on about access to family planning and how nobody wants anybody to have to have an abortion. We want people to have the tools to prevent it. When you cut "abortion funding" you are cutting family planning funding and that hurts everyone. Until we can all have affordable insurance we (as america) need an accessible option for reproductive healthcare with a non-judgey atomosphere. Done. Oh, but you say it's the parents job to talk to their kids, and that will fix it... really? NO. not realistic. done. topic ended.

I went home and made a foot bath with Dr. Singha's mustard bath powder. I have been swearing on foot baths for comfort this summer. This mustard soak was wonderful. I really recommend it. I look forward to another one tomorrow night.

I keep jars of cut onions around my apartment. They suck up germs (true? false? who cares, it's neat). Sometimes an onion half will grow (that's when its really neat). This one looks like a beautiful swan or heron.

I will now be posting all my craft tutorials, mending projects, etc... on this thing. If there is any how-to that you want to see, or questions about how to do something, let me know and I will try to address it there. Some future posts will be sewing basic pajama pants, hemming jeans, and some basic pattern ideas for bags.

I also have this little project. I have been kind of neglecting these lately. That will stop soon.

SUNDAY EVENING

My sister and her boyfriend (hello and thanks to Molly and Erik!) did a lot of canning last fall. Some of the salsa ended up too hot for them. It turns out it is perfect for me and I now have TWO jars of this amazing and spicy spicy cilantro lime habañero salsa. I can't wait to make breakfast egg tacos with this stuff. Yum!

Tonight I hung out with my folks. Our dinner plan was to make some tempura.

Here are our veggies we used... green pepper, asparagus, parsley and mushrooms (oh! and onion).

Instead of making the batter from scratch we used a mix!

Make sure you use really cold water and keep your bowl of batter in a larger bowl of ice water.

The asparagus got fried in pairs connected by toothpicks.

(Make sure you dry the produce really well after washing it. You want as little water as possible going into the deep fryer.)

Here are the asparagus pairs fried and on a rack over a cookie sheet to be kept warm in the oven (set to 200º).

Here is the deep fryer. It is set to 375º. It is easy to forget how dang hot that oil is. Do not forget how dangerous this can be. Keep safety in the front of your mind.

Once the piece of food has dropped in the oil, then risen back to the top, drizzle more batter on top of it. There is a name for that (but I do not know what it is).

Everything stayed nice and crunchy (not soggy!) keeping warm in the oven.

While we were frying the things, the rice cooker was making some rice and there was some chicken stock, mirin and soy sauce (I don't remember if there were more ingredients...).

Here are our bowl-plates with rice and dipping sauce.

Here is a plate with the tempura on a tray just in case. We are dinner while we watched the end of a show on tv and then listened to traditional Japanese music in the living room.

It was a wonderful evening and delicious dinner.

There were a lot of dishes. I tried to do some, but mom told me to stop.
