commissioned project - drawings to dolls

My friend asked me to make some dolls based on some drawings her daughter made.

The drawings don't have limbs, so a doll would really be more of a pillow. I took 2 of the images and made bags with them on it and made the cute apple face one into a pillow.

I made a tiny tote bag for her daughter, with her name in her handwriting on it. The red ribbon has blue paper boats on it.

This is an adult size tote bag with the cool fishie ghost guy on it. There is a pocket inside, split into 2 compartments. The pocket is colorful and has rick rack.

Here is the face. It has blue cotton fabric on the back.

I am looking forward to future drawings of things with limbs and bodies. They will made excellent dolls.

commissioned project - pins!

A friend wanted some pins made for his birthday. He is now old enough to run for president, so why not have some election buttons?! 

As a bonus I also made some giant squid pins. I tried to draw up some cat ones, but the cats looked mean and dumb, so I stuck with squids. 

Someday I  want to own a button maker.

the hoppy birds

I took a long walk to work the other day. I was faster than I thought I would be, so I had time to kill when I got there. I hung around in the alley for a bit and watched all the birds in the vines. There are so many. I just love them. They hop around so cute, all the time. They play in puddles and they are always chattering away hidden in bushes and small trees. It seems like they are always having fun. They aren't serious like a robin or a crow.

I had to play with my funny phone app that can add things like arrows or hearts or diamonds. I bet there are twice this many birds in there.

This is the result of maybe my fourth attempt at making a nice egg doll (I usually screw up and discard the project half way through). I love these damn dolls. I have a vintage one and one my mother made me. I have a clip art image of one too. I don't know what they are called and so I cannot find pictures of them online. I have tried searching so many different word combinations.

I embroidered the face. Only the body is stuffed. Next time I will put interfacing in the limbs. I will buy really really fluffy yellow yarn the next time I go to the craft store, that would make perfect hair. This one has brown wool blend fluffy yarn hair. This is a smaller egg pillow. The body is about 5 inches tall.

There is a Ben Franklin store in Fergus Falls. I was in heaven. It was really warm outside and the snow was melting and the sun was beautiful. Fergus Falls is beautiful. AND there is a Goodwill and Ben Franklin in the same strip mall! I had a lot of fun spending time in those stores. This pile of babies made me think of the packaged chicken feet.

At the meat market in St Joseph, Minnesota, they have packaged variety packs of apples. Tiny the Deer (trip mascot) found this exciting.

The yarn wall at the Ben Franklin store. I wish I could have a part time job at a store like this. They had everything. It would be so much fun, and I would get paid.

It got colder and colder the closer we got driving back to Minneapolis from Fargo.

HELLO 2013

 

 New Years Eve was pretty great. Work, dinner with friends, hanging out, then a cover band show at the Hex. It was my first time seeing a Bruce Springsteen cover band, so great.

 

Waiting for the 2 bus on the westbank. New yarn, needles AND grippy things for my shoes (for the ice and dangerous mn winter sidewalk terrain).

The magic tree decorations continue at 121.
